Mum's the word when it comes to Christmas shopping

Christmas is coming and yes, it looks like another job for mum as new research from Mintel reveals that this year, Britain’s mums (26%) will be more than twice as likely as dads (12%) to to buy gifts for the kids. And what is more, mums’ work will not be stopping here, as it looks like she’ll be shouldering the bulk of the remaining parental duties too.

Chicago (November 28, 2011)—Americans are downsizing in many ways…smaller cars, smaller homes and generally less “stuff.” As people cut back, their furniture purchasing habits are making big time changes. Consumers are now seeking functional and useful furniture pieces that fit well into their homes and lifestyles—and aren’t in a rush to purchase them.

Christmas trading 2011 - “a lot better than feared” reports Mintel

With Christmas 2011 fast approaching, new research from Mintel reveals a little more Christmas cheer than first envisaged. Indeed, Mintel expects retail sales growth of between 4% and 5% in December 2011 and as much as 1% of that could be real volume growth.

Three main factors are behind this upbeat forecast:

  1. Our Tracker research shows that people plan to spend more

  2. Retail sales have been very strong and there is no likelihood that they will weaken significantly in the last three months of the year.
