Pride month: How brands are showing their colors

The month of June is dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and, this year, paying tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Brands are showing their support by donating proceeds of products to charities that support LGBTQ+ initiatives, adapting their logos to have the colors of the Pride flag and creating clothing lines in support of the community.

Here are just a few of the many brands that are showing their support:

Brew Dr. Lombucha

Many brands have released special packaging for their products this past month showcasing the Pride flag colors. Brew Dr. Kombucha released a rainbow-wrapped can in partnership with The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people.  Each can provides the lifeline number for The Trevor Project and Brew Dr. Kombucha is making a donation that will be enough to train three TrevorChat crisis counselors who support more than 1,500 youth per year. 

Herbivore Botanicals

This year many brands are donating the proceeds from exclusive Pride products or current products to organizations that help the LGBTQ+ community. Herbivore Botanicals is donating five dollars for every purchase of their Prism product to Immigration Equality, which helps LGBTQ+ immigrants in the US. Herbivore Botanicals is also providing giveaways that let the winner choose an organization of their choice to receive a $1,000 donation. 

Starbucks

Starbucks is taking many different steps to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community. For the month of June, the Starbucks Foundation is teaming up with Lady Gaga and matching all donations to the Born This Way Foundation. Lady Gaga’s foundation works to educate and support young people with their mental health and help to strengthen their communities. Starbucks has been using the hashtag #ExtraShotOfPride in their social posts this month that feature their employees in the LGBTQ+ community. Each employee feature talks about the individual and how Starbucks has made an impact on their LGBTQ+ journey. 

Chipotle

Chipotle shows its support for the LGBTQ+ community year round and this year they were listed as one of America’s Best Employers for Diversity 2019 by Forbes. This month, Chipotle has been selling Pride merchandise to support The Trevor Project. Chipotle will also be at many Pride parades and hosting fundraisers to support local LGBTQ+ nonprofits across the country.

Disney

Disneyland Paris hosted its first ever Pride parade at the beginning of the month. It was a celebration of all things Disney with the sparkle of Pride. Disney also released a ‘Rainbow Disney Collection’ line of clothes and accessories with 10% of the proceeds going towards GLSEN, an organization dedicated to making safe environments for LGBTQ+ students. 

 

Nike

Many clothing brands have created special clothing lines this month to show their support. Nike provides support to numerous national and local organizations that provide services to help create a more equal playing field for all. The tagline of the campaign is, “Betrue until we all win.” The stars of the promotional video are all LGBTQ+ athletes. All of the clothing in the line is unisex,  fitting every type of body and featuring the colors of the Pride flag. In addition to the campaign this month, Nike is supporting more than 20 organizations that impact the LGBTQ+ community. 

Nissan

Nissan USA is dedicated to an ongoing effort to ensuring diversity, inclusion and equality in the workplace. This month, Nissan is showing its support for the LGBTQ+ community by sponsoring the NYC PrideFest and 25 other LGBTQ+ festivals throughout the US

 

Mastercard

Recently, Mastercard partnered with the NYC Commission on Human Rights to install a rainbow of signs on the corner of Christopher and Gay Street to show that acceptance matters. Many individuals in the LGBTQ+ community feel that the name on their credit card does not identify who they are. Being aware of that, Mastercard has started a new initiative this month where individuals can now put their chosen true name on the front of their card.
