New formats, convenience and localised skincare benefits – these are among the main factors driving innovation in the suncare market. Brands can differentiate themselves by promoting not just UV protection, but also protection against pollution, digital screens’ blue light or ageing.

Using Mintel’s Global New Products Database (GNPD), we highlight 6 suncare products launched in 2018 that tap into these current trends.

Stelbi Magic Sun SPF 50+ PA+++ – South Korea

A 2-in-1 sunscreen with two separate dispensers that allow the one product to be used as a body spray or as a lotion for the face. It is said to use a New Trans Formulation technology, which transforms the pudding-like texture into a sprayable liquid when the bottle is shaken.

Hawaiian Tropic Duo Defence Sun Lotion SPF 30 – UK

Anti-pollution claims continue to rise, with Mintel’s GNPD recording that 4% of recent suncare launches in Europe made reference to pollution protecting benefits versus less than 1% five years ago. Mainstream beauty brands have started to adopt anti-pollution claims, such as Hawaiian Tropic’s recent Duo Defence launch. It’s said to offer a lightweight moisturising formula, to help protect against the damaging effects of sun and pollution.

Tarte Tarteguard Mineral Powder Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 – US

A brush-on powder sunscreen with non-chemical filters, it does not mess up makeup and helps prevent sunburn. According to the manufacturer, it defends skin from UVA/UVB rays as a translucent mineral powder, which goes on easily over makeup, without leaving a chalky finish. Moreover, it offers the extra convenience of keeping hands clean!

Bioage Bio-Sun Protect Ultra Dry Effect Fluid SPF 30 – Brazil

While there is currently little proof that exposure to screens’ ‘blue light’ can impact the skin, studies suggest it may accelerate pigmentation changes and add fine lines and wrinkles. This sunscreen from Brazil is said to protect against UV rays, pollution and blue light, while mattifying the skin and reducing the appearance of acne.

Dauf Hands Skin Sun Protector SPF 30 – Brazil

The condition of skin on the hands can be an indicator of age. This sunscreen specifically focuses on protecting the hands from sun damage and ageing signs, such as sun spots and pigmentation. It offers high UV protection whilst hydrating and delaying photo ageing thanks to vitamin E.

Coola Full Spectrum 360° Sun Silk Drops SPF 30 – US

This organic and vegan facial sunscreen comes in a bottle with pipette. The drops can be used alone or blended with other moisturisers or foundations, saving the time involved in having to separately apply these products – although SPF value may decline if blended. It also strongly taps into concerns about blue light, offering both indoor and outdoor protection.
