June 8th is recognized as World Ocean’s Day, a global celebration of events, education and demonstrations of people giving their time and money to support the quality of our oceans. Brands are also showing their support by providing a wide range of ocean-friendly products and donations as well as transparent messaging on ways consumers can do their part.

Here are some examples of brands making waves for World Oceans Day:

Reusable Cups

One Less is dedicated to reducing waste caused by polyethylene inside paper cups often sold at coffee shops. The chemical free company encourages consumers to bring these cups to coffee shops for use, and points out that some coffee shops offer a discount for using their own cup.

Plant-based alternatives to seafood

Ocean Hugger Foods is an organization that provides sustainable, plant-based alternatives to popular seafood proteins. Leading up to World Oceans Day, Ocean Hugger Foods has been informing followers with ideas on how they can take action for the oceans as well as alternative ideas for their favorite seafood while making a difference in the oceans on their Instagram page.

Men’s fashion

Fashion brand, Etro has a longstanding mission devoted to finding more sustainable ways to create fashion. For this year’s World Oceans Day, Etro created a down jacket that is entirely made up of 120 recycled plastic water bottles.

Handmade Cosmetics

Lush offers Shark Fin Soap and body lotion to support groups fighting for environmental justice, animal protection and human rights. Suncare

Healthy suncare brand, COOLA is committed to planting a minimum of 100 healthy corals to help restore reefs impacted by climate change as well as one coral reef for every online order made on World Oceans Day.

Skincare

Each year, skincare brand La Mer offers a product to support ocean conservation around World Oceans Day, including this year’s Blue Heart Crème de la Mer. It makes sense: La Mer’s signature Miracle Broth ingredient is made from sea kelp. La Mer is donating $25 for every public post made using #LaMerBlueHeart and #LaMerDonation to the La Mer Blue Heart Oceans Fund to support ocean conservation projects around the world.

Haircare

One of Love Beauty and Planet’s core missions is to help reduce waste. The organic hair care brand has introduced a special line of shampoo that’s bottles are made from 100% ocean bound post-consumer resin (PCR) plastic. Leading up to World Oceans Day, Love Beauty and Planet has posted content about the ways plastic is affecting the ocean and how followers can help make an impact.

Beauty

Beauty brand One Ocean Beauty is asking their followers to make one simple change this World Oceans Day and make a pledge to help save the oceans. Examples of ways to make a change were getting involved locally, opting for metal straws, using reusable totes, using stainless steel water bottles and using sustainable products.
