Fruity Beauty: 3 fruits trending in beauty (Part 1)

Fruits are a natural and delicious way to increase hydration – not only as part of a healthy diet, but also when incorporated into the skincare routine. And with 78% of US facial skincare users interested in trying products made with fruit-based ingredients, Mintel’s Gastronomia trend has proven to be more than just an Instagram-appealing craze. Looking at the Global New Products Database (GNPD), here are some of the trending fruit extracts in global skincare launches.

Watermelon

The juicy and refreshing fruit is not only associated with a delicious summer scent, but also known for its hydrating and brightening properties. Rich in water, exfoliating citrulline and anti-inflammatory lycopene, watermelon has been widely used across the skincare and makeup categories. Even though still a niche ingredient, the use of watermelon in global skincare launches has doubled over the last five years, according to GNPD.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Ultra Fine Mist (USA)

Designed to envelop the skin “like a dreamy morning fog” for a breeze of softening, smoothing, and illuminating hydration, this bi-phase mist is made of 84% watermelon extract, paired with hyaluronic acid, hibiscus, moringa seed, rice germ, and apple cider vinegar to add antioxidant, anti-pollution and make-up setting properties.

Jayjun Cosmetic Watermelon Hydro Sun Cushion SPF 50+ PA+++ (South Korea)

The versatile sun-protective cushion offers 48-hour of moisture for the whole family. Thanks to a watermelon complex of fruit extract and seed oil, the product quenches the skin, creates a cooling sensation, and soothes tired, sun-exposed skin.

Pineapple

The tropical fruit is a multi-tasking skincare ingredient thanks to its high content of alpha-hydroxy acids and bromelain enzymes that gently exfoliate and restore glow, as well as antioxidant vitamin C that tackles hyper-pigmentation. Its penetration in global facial skincare launches doubled in the last three years, according to GNPD.

Too Faced Pineapple Glow Moisturizing & Brightening Face Mask (USA)

This pineapple-powered gel mask is said to boost radiance and smooth the skin’s texture with the exfoliating power of lactic and glycolic acids, with a refreshing pineapple scent. The product is formulated with pineapple extract, to exfoliate and soften skin; prickly pear extract, to moisturize and smooth skin; lemon and apple extracts, to brighten skin; and AHAs, to gently exfoliate and soften skin.

Glow Recipe Pineapple-C Bright Serum (USA)

Glow Recipe’s newest serum harnesses the ‘glass skin’ trend, promising to create a bright, smooth and translucent complexion by banishing dullness and dryness. The formula features 22% pineapple juice to brighten, hydrate and help fade dark spots and acne scars.

Strawberry

The tasty strawberry is more than just a way to fragrance lip balms and bubble baths. Richer in vitamin C than oranges, strawberries are also high in antioxidants, vitamin E and quercetin, which contribute to protect against environmental damage, reduce inflammation and increase skin’s own production of collagen.

Volition Strawberry-C Serum (USA)

Designed to reduce wrinkles, hydrate and even skin tone, this serum contains strawberry fruit and seed extract to boost collagen production thanks to its high vitamin C content, while unclogging pores, controlling excess oil and brightening dull skins.

Beauty Kitchen Raw Inventions Berry British Sustainable Beauty Oil (UK)

Tapping into sustainability and food waste concerns, this nourishing facial oil is entirely made of upcycled seed oils from strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants. It uses the extracts’ richness in omega fatty oils and vitamins to make skin fresh and plump like a “juicy berry”.
