At in-cosmetics Asia this year, Mintel’s expert analyst will explore the growing suncare market and identify the future trends that manufacturers, companies and brands should consider to win in the market.

Here, we take a look at some of the most interesting suncare launches from the Asia-Pacific region.

Cica makes its way into suncare

The South Korean beauty market is seeing the emergence of suncare products featuring the trending Centella Asiatica (cica) as a hero ingredient for its soothing benefit—blurring the lines between skincare and suncare.

A by Bom Blue Cica+ Daily UV Defense Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++, South Korea
This product is described as a daily sunscreen cream to protect the skin from UVA and UVB, as well as external stimuli. It is formulated with Centella asiatica extract and azulene to soothe and protect the skin from irritation, and sea water and molokhia to promote healthier and firmer skin, This sunscreen also claims to improve wrinkles and brighten the skin.

Holika Holika Less on Skin Redness Calming Cica Sun Stick SPF 50+ PA++++, South Korea
This sun stick contains Cica-Nesium, a complex of Centella asiatica extract and magnesium, said to calm sensitive red skin effectively. It also features Pollu-Stop which protects the skin against external environmental stressors.

Tone-up

According to Mintel Global New Products Database (GNPD), tone-up skin brightening beauty and personal care launches are most active within the Asia-Pacific region, moving from makeup to suncare. Mintel research also reveals that almost a third of female makeup consumers in China use tone-up creams.

This product features a lavender coloured formula that’s designed to instantly brighten skin tones. Suitable for the face and body, this sunscreen claims to protect from environmental stresses including UV rays, pollen and dust. It also claims to enhance and prolong the wear of foundation. The waterproof formula contains raspberry extract, lemon extract, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C for moisturisation, and is free from mineral oil and paraben.

Cute Press UV Expert Protection All Day Bright Tone-Up Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++, Thailand
This is described as a multi-tasking tone-up sunscreen that not only protects against UV rays but also instantly transforms dull, tired-looking skin into bright, glowing and silky skin. Its flattering pink shade is claimed to blend beautifully with all skin tones. It features a mild formula that contains chamomile extract to soothe skin after sun exposure, and deep sea minerals to lock in moisture.

Convenience in today’s busy world

Consumers in Asia-Pacific are on the lookout for convenient and easy-to-use suncare products. According to Mintel research, two in five female sunscreen users in China agree it’s important that sunscreen is easy to apply and that format (eg spray, lotion) is a deciding factor for them when buying sunscreen (respectively).

There is a gap in the market for more portable formats that provide quick sun protection for those on-the-move. This non-comodogenic sunblock spray from Pratista is easy-to-use and oil-free, and is portable and lightweight, retailing in 8ml bottles. For added differentiation, the brand also offers different pack colours and variants (eg for men, for women).

MiMC Aging-Care Deep UVA Mineral Powder Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++, Japan
This innovative product is described as a new generation sunscreen powder formulated with natural minerals and botanical extracts to provide 5-in-1 protection against UVA, UVB, infrared rays, blue light and air pollution, while leaving the skin firm, radiant and moisturised. It comes in an on-the-go case with a mirror, making it the perfect tool for touch-ups.
